ABOUT THIS EPISODE

In a world where access to essential healthcare is often dictated by economic privilege, the importance of addressing the systemic barriers to medicine access becomes paramount. In this June 2024 episode of R&D with D&D, we talk with Brook Baker, a recently retired law professor who has spent his career advocating for improved healthcare access. Dave and Denise delve into the complexities of pharmaceutical patents and the impact of corporate monopolies. Through this discussion, we uncover the urgent need for reforms that prioritize human health over profit, fostering a future where everyone, regardless of their socioeconomic status, can receive the care they need without fear of financial ruin. These are key issues as we enter 2025 and a new Presidential administration; listen in for insights on how to navigate these complexities intelligently.

“If we don’t change that fundamental reality of commercial control and intellectual property fundamentalism, we will be unprepared to deliver equitably to all the people who need on an appropriate basis.”

-Brook Baker

“No one should have to choose between medicine and other necessities. No one should have to use the emergency room every time a child gets sick. And no one should have to live in constant fear that a medical problem will become a financial crisis.”

-Brad Henry
