ABOUT THIS EPISODE

In this November 2023 interview, Hearsay Culture highlights the groundbreaking and unique expertise and work of a return guest, Southern Poverty Law Center’s Megan Squire, a computer scientist and the nation’s leading hate speech and social media data scientist. Not only a zealous advocate, Megan collects, aggregates, and analyzes quantitative data on hate groups found on social media and other platforms, and conveys this information to those that may be impacted, or may be able to respond. Having witnessed the Charlottesville right-wing protest in 2017 (including being in close proximity to Heather Heyer, the murdered 32 year old counter-protestor), Megan provides her unique insights on hate and its manifestations on the web. Listen to hear about Megan’s brave and essential work, why she does what she does, and how an expert views the continuing rise of hate groups online.

“The online ecosystem is too fraught right now. It’s broken in too many ways to just not care.”

-Megan Squire

“Men build too many walls and not enough bridges.”

-Joseph Fort Norton
